Most people have heard of the first look, the mini session just before the ceremony where the bride and groom see each other in a private setting, maybe say a prayer or share a glass of champagne and gather themselves for the rest of the day. It’s not for everyone, but for those who suffer from nerves or who would rather get their tearing up done in private, it’s a fun idea.
A slightly different type of first look session that we like to do is called the Parents’ First Look. While the wedding is all about the love shared between the bride and groom, parents are often overlooked in their importance in the couple’s lives. Giving his daughter to another man is often as emotional for a father as taking that woman as his wife is for a groom.
That’s where the Parents’ First Looks comes in. Sometimes it involves both parents, sometimes just dad, but it is sort of the same concept: a reveal of the bride in her big white dress with her hair and makeup perfectly done up, ready to become a wife. Following the reveal, the bride often spends a few minutes alone with her parents before moving on to the next phase of the day.
Often times the first look is simply done in the room where the bride is getting ready or a room or hallway close by. Like a first look with the groom, we have Dad stand either facing away or behind a door or with his eyes covered. When the bride approaches, he turns around or uncovers his eyes to see his beautiful daughter standing in front of him. Often there will be tears, both from Dad and from Bride. It’s a beautiful, emotional moment.
We love a Parents’ First Look. It gives Dad a special moment. It acknowledges him as the first important man in his little girl’s life and reminds them both that there will always be a place in her heart for her daddy.
What do you think about the Parents’ First Look? Does it sound like something you’d want to do with your parents?
